Expanding lines, generative animation

Gerhard Funk (Austria)

"Expanding Lines" is a generative, endless animation with horizontal and vertical lines based on a regular square grid. Each line expands from a random point in the grid, and both ends try to reach the opposite edges of the square. However, the expansion process is stopped by crossing lines. Therefore, some lines become short and others very long. After a random lifetime, each line shrinks back to zero and gives others the opportunity to grow.

The result is a permanently changing Mondrian-like line configuration and only for a few moments there are stable states without movement.

"Expanding Lines" can be seen as a metaphor of life.
